SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS RESEARCH SUMMIT – S.MA.R.T. 2022

The S.MA.R.T Conference is coming to Vancouver on August 7th-9th, 2022! Come join us to learn about the most advanced research activities in sustainable materials development and connect with the experts of the highest caliber in the field while enjoying some of the most beautiful views of Vancouver.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Sustainability is a grand challenge that humanity must strive to address in the years ahead. Disruptive innovations in materials science hold the key to enable a list of critical technologies that could support sustainable development in different areas such as water, energy, food, and plastics.

In response to this call, a group of prominent scientists coming from various research institutions in North America, UK, continental Europe and Asia work together creating a platform coined ‘Sustainable Materials Research Summit (SMART)’ to foster knowledge sharing and academic excellence in the field.

SMART is a global endeavour for the common good, aiming to gather international experts at the forefront of research in the field of sustainable materials including naturally occurring and manufactured materials. The first annual meeting was held in Kunming in 2021 and the next meeting will take place in Vancouver, Canada.

This conference aims to provide a forum for fundamental and applied research in sustainable materials (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, wood, chitin, silk, other natural materials) and various aspects of these materials including:

  • Structures and charaterizations – designs, molecular scale/nanoscale engineering, advanced characterizations

  • Properties – mechanical, thermal, optical, fluidic, and ionic properties, scaling behavior with dimensions, measurement, and multiscale modeling

  • Processing and manufacturing – various top-down and bottom-up approaches, additive manufacturing, sustainability in manufacturing

  • Applications – bioplastics, printed electronics, biotech, batteries, micro/nano scale fluidics, water technologies, wearables, structural materials, building technologies

  • Sustainability assessment – life cycle analysis (LCA), techno-economic analysis (TEA), global impact

ABOUT THE HOST

S.MA.R.T. Conference 2022 is hosted by the BioProducts Institute of the University of British Columbia located in Vancouver, Canada.

The University of British Columbia(UBC) is a global centre for teaching, learning and research, consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities in the world. UBC embraces innovation and transforms ideas into action. Since 1915, UBC has been opening doors of opportunity for people with the curiosity, drive and vision to shape a better world.

The BioProducts Institute (BPI) is an innovative ecosystem of high-impact fundamental and applied researchers working on solutions to today’s climate and environmental challenges. The Institute brings together inter- and multi-disciplinary researchers comprised of scientists, engineers, and market and policy experts to unlock the full potential of materials, chemicals and fuels produced in nature. Based on the guiding principles of circularity, sustainability and renewability, BPI seeks to reduce society’s footprint and tackle rampant environmental challenges such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and plastic waste.
